Free online courses that parents/carers might find useful

Feb 8, 2018

We have recently been made aware of a couple of free online courses that parents/carers may find useful:

New course from the Communication Trust

The Communication Trust are excited to share the new and improved free CPD online short course – An introduction to speech, language and communication! We have re-developed this course so it is now tailored for the needs of practitioners working across all the different education phases. Users have the option to access four different pathways – early years, primary, secondary or further education.

Each course has a number of activities and resources to support learning. The course aims to boost practitioners’ knowledge and skills in:

  • Understanding the importance of speech, language and communication as central life skills
Understanding typical speech, language and communication
  • Strategies to support children’s speech, language and communication development
  • Identifying and supporting children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)

The course is suitable for anyone working with children and young people across all different backgrounds and is completely free. To access the CPD online short course please click here.

New course from Future Learn (SMART-ASD: Matching Autistic People with Technology Resources)

The is an opportunity to join a free online course, starting on 2nd April 2018 for 4 weeks (3hrs per week), looking at how technology can support children and young people with Autism and Learning Disabilities.

Most children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) also have an Intellectual Disability (ID) – or Learning Difficulty. However, this group is hugely under-represented within research and knowledge regarding this specific group can be hard to find.

On this course you will get more of an understanding of ASD and ID specifically. Then we will explore how technology can be used to best support this group, introducing you to the SMART-ASD app that identifies the skills and needs of children with ASD and ID so that the most suitable technologies can be identified to support them.

The main topics covered in the course are:

  • What is ASD and Intellectual (or learning) Disability (ID)?
  • How can technology best support children with ASD and ID?
  • How to choose the most appropriate technology to support children with ASD and ID.
  • SMART-ASD: Matching autistic people with technology – how recommendations can be made, specific to each child.

The course is suitable for parents, carers and practitioners. You do not need any prior experience of this subject. This course is aimed at all those interested in finding out more about autism and intellectual (or learning) disability in children, and how technology can support them.
